A Bit of Introduction to Electric Car

By definition, electric car is essentially a car that is powered by one electric motor or more. The electrical power is supplied by energy that is stored within rechargeable batteries. Throughout a period between late 19th century and early 20th century, electric cars were quite popular while the first practical electric automobile was invented and produced during the 1880s. A combination of rise in cheaper gasoline-powered vehicles being mass-produced and the invention of internal combustion engines, electric vehicles fell out of favor. First commercial use of electric automobiles happened in the USA. By year 1987, taxis in New York were electricity-powered, which were all manufactured by a company called Philadelphia Electric Carriage and Wagon. Prominent manufacturers of electric automobiles during the 20th century were Milburn, Riker, Edison, Anderson, Columbia, Baker, and Anthony Electric. Electric cars excel in a lot of respects compared to their gasoline-powered counterparts. The electricity-powered cars do not require their users to change gear and these cars are notably quieter during operation. Resurgence in mass-produced electric cars happens from 2008. There are a lot of factors that contribute to this reemergence of electricity-powered vehicles; chief among them are: effort put forth to reduce greenhouse emissions, alarmingly high price of oil, and improved batteries. Governments of either local or national rank apply subsidies, tax credits, and all other kinds of incentive to help promote production, introduction, adoption, and conversion to electric cars in response of these factors.

A Bit of Introduction to Electric Car

As mentioned before, an electric car is far quieter than internal combustion engines. Electric cars also leave no tailpipe emissions. Electric cars can be more efficient than internal combustion engines in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially when the electric vehicles are recharged using electrical power source that are of low-emission variety. Concerns about use of electric cars revolve more around the fact that it takes a long time to recharge the batteries. In addition, most places are not fitted with adequate recharging infrastructure. Drivers oftentimes suffer from range anxiety, a condition in which said driver constantly worries about their car’s batteries being depleted far before they get to where they are headed. The cost of batteries proportionately limits traversable range. It also consequently increases the cost of purchase compared to internal combustion vehicles. However, in places where oil is imported, use of electric cars can significantly reduce imports, which may impact greatly on reduced national expenses and decreased basic budgetary concerns. The number of available utility vans and passengers electric cars, which are legal, allowed to run on highway, and of all-electric variety, reaches 30 models. This is a number acquired since December 2015. In September 2016, the total sale number for vehicles that purely run on electricity, legally allowed running on highways, and of light-duty type had passed one million units, globally. This number shows that awareness about the potentials of an electric car has grown exponentially over the years. People grow conscious about their environment as the price of gasoline continues to soar while buying power of the people seems to get stuck, if not reduced.
